Contains largest wooden statue in Japan of Kannon, goddess of Mercy. Founded by Kobadaishi after his return from China in 806. Oldest Temple in Fukuoka. The graves of several early members of the Kuroda Family (local feudal lords since 1600) are here.
By Subway: Leave Gion station by exit four and turn right. Almost in front of you (by the road) is a map in English indicating the temples and shrines in the area. Tochoji is about 100metres up the road (away from the Hakata Station) on the right. If you prefer to walk from Hakata station, leave the station by the Hakata Gate and walk up the large road stretching out at "5 past 1" ahead of you. Stay on the right side of the road. Exit 4 of Gion subway is about 600metres up. After that, as above.
By Car: it is on Tohaku Dori, on the left side (coming from Tenjin) about 600 metres before the Hakata Station.
