The present shrine was restored in 1623 in the ancient architectural style of "Sumiyoshi-zukuri". It is believed to be one of the older shrines in Kyushu and is dedicated to the guardian god of sailors.
What it's like Despite being in the centre of the city the shrine is set in leafy woodland. Although not visually the most spectacular shrine in the area, it is an enjoyable half hour's wander...
From Hakata Station: Leave by the Hakata Gate and cross the road immediately in front of the station. Turn left. You will follow this road for about 3/4 of a mile - it will bifurcate after about 100metres, stay on the pavement and keep going, following it round to the left and crossing any intervening roads as necessary. You will eventually come to an area of woodland on your right. That is the "side entrance" to the shrine. Walk through the woods, past a rather ramshackle "dohyo" until you come to the shrine main entrance.
