Fukuoka Asian Art Museum Type: Museum/Gallery (Qjmp: 7011)
Art Museum dedicated to Asian Art
 | 7th and 8th floor... |
"Containing over 1000 pieces of Asian contemporary art, this is one of the largest and most varied collections in the world." says the official blurb.
More interesting than the the standard art museum, good indication of the potential for modern Asian art if occasionally a little "safe". The museum is currently (17th Sept 2005 - 27th Nov. 2005) holding the 3rd Fukuoka Asian Art Triennale - "Parallel Realities, Asian Art Now".
The pieces are generally presented well and it is very much worth a visit, 'though not all pieces have English language explanations. (Strange, given that English is, de-facto, the language that ties Asia together...) There are occasional visiting exhibitions, a museum shop and the usual array of educational materials. Introductory pamphlets exist in a variety of languages including English.
The musem has a very active programme of exchanges, visiting artists, lectures (sometimes in English) and so on. They run an English language mailing list (details on the homepage) and regularly update their website in English.
Note that there is usually an exhibition by a local artist on the floor above (8th floor) - this fact is poorly signposted though it is sometimes rather good.
A curious aspect of the Asian Art Museum is the total lack of Japanese contemporary art in the standing exhibition.
The main "Fukuoka Art Museum" is in Ohori.

Several interesting pieces in the lobby area.
Part of Riverain Complex in Nakasu (exit 6 of Nakasu-kawabata subway station, museum is above subway).
5 minutes from the Gofuku-machi ramp on the urban expressway.
 3 min from Nakasu-kawabata st'n on foot.
